Hello Night Owls!
I'm thrilled to share our recent journey in creating an engaging vocabulary teaching video for 5th grtade students in a state school. My partner Nur Çögen and I delved into the world of the flipped EFL classroom, and it was an incredible learning experience!
You may ask what is a flipped classroom? The flipped classroom is an innovative teaching approach that reverses the traditional education model. In a flipped classroom, instructional content is delivered outside of the classroom through videos, readings, or other resources, allowing students to engage with the material at their own pace. It has so many pros such as the flexible learning pace, active learning, individual learning, increased engagement, and so on. Of course, access to technology, teacher training, and lack of student preparation may make it challenging to fulfill that kind of approach perfectly.
First things first, we explored the MEB English coursebook for 5th grade students, selecting a group of words to teach. To add an extra layer of fun and comprehension, we decided to use CapCut, a versatile video editing tool. The process was both exciting and challenging. We carefully planned how to present the words, ensuring a perfect balance of entertainment and education. As we navigated through the creation phase, we faced some challenges in coordinating our ideas. Moreover, it was hard to use CapCut at first sight, but Nur helped me to understand it.
In the flipped classroom approach, we not only crafted an engaging video but also designed a quiz to reinforce the learning. We aimed to ensure students understood the content thoroughly. We stumbled upon a fantastic example of vocabulary checkpoints, similar to what we envisioned, on Wordwall.
Lastly, let’s talk about CapCut! This user-friendly tool allowed us to edit and narrate our video effortlessly. With its easy interface, we seamlessly combined visuals, narration, and background music to craft a three-minute video that we are proud to share.
